Spring Checklist

The makeover transformed our home’s landscape into a beautiful, welcoming space that feels fresh, inviting, and perfectly suited to enjoy the outdoors.

1. Water Deeply and Consistently
When watering planting beds and turf, aim for about one inch of water per watering. Deep watering encourages stronger root systems. If we do not receive rainfall, plan to water every seven days.
2. Plant Trees, Shrubs, and Perennials
Spring is an excellent time to install trees, shrubs, and perennial plants. The moderate temperatures give plants time to establish roots before the intense summer heat arrives.
3. Refresh Your Mulch
Check your planting beds and replenish mulch where needed. A fresh layer helps retain soil moisture, regulate soil temperature, and suppress weeds.
4. Water Trees Properly
Trees require a different watering schedule than turf.
Young trees: deep water once per week.
Mature trees: deep water about once per month to maintain strong root systems.
5. Inspect Your Irrigation System
Spring is the perfect time to check for leaks, broken sprinkler heads, or clogged emitters. Making repairs now ensures your system runs efficiently when temperatures rise.
6. Apply Pre-Emergent Weed Control
Applying a pre-emergent herbicide now helps prevent many spring and summer weeds from germinating. Early application can save you significant time and effort later in the season.
7. Pray for Rain
Even with good irrigation practices, West Texas landscapes always benefit from a good soaking rain. Natural rainfall helps flush salts from the soil and provides deep moisture plants love.
With these simple steps, your landscape will be well prepared for a healthy and vibrant growing season. A little work in early spring makes a big difference when summer arrives.
Spring is one of the most important seasons for setting your landscape up for success in West Texas. Warmer temperatures and longer days mean plants are waking up and ready to grow. A little attention now will help your yard stay healthy and beautiful through the heat of summer.
